Dr Joseph Murphy Cause of Death: How the New Thought Author and Minister Passed Away

Dr Joseph Murphy was a renowned author and minister who wrote and taught about the power of the subconscious mind and the principles of New Thought. A Life of Learning and Teaching

Dr Joseph Murphy was born in Ireland in 1898, the son of a private school headmaster. He was raised as a Roman Catholic and studied for the priesthood with the Jesuits. However, he left the seminary after having a healing experience with prayer and moved to the United States in 1922. He became a pharmacist in New York and later earned a degree in chemistry.

Dr Murphy traveled to India and studied Hindu philosophy with various sages. He was impressed by the similarities between New Thought and Hinduism, and incorporated some of the Hindu concepts into his own teachings.

In the mid-1940s, Dr Murphy moved to Los Angeles and met Ernest Holmes, the founder of Religious Science. He was ordained as a Religious Science minister and taught at the Institute of Religious Science. He also met Erwin Gregg, the president of Divine Science, and was re-ordained as a Divine Science minister. He became the pastor of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church, which he grew into one of the largest New Thought churches in the country.

A Death of Peace and Grace

Dr Murphy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 1981, one of the most aggressive and fatal forms of cancer. He did not seek any conventional medical treatment, but relied on his faith and his subconscious mind to heal him. He continued to write and teach until his last days, and did not show any signs of fear or despair. He died peacefully at his home in Laguna Hills, California, on December 16, 1981.
